Journal Entry April 30, 2020

It’s night now. I went for a run just before sunset. Everything really did look different; like a neutron bomb had gone off. All the houses were there, the trees, no damage, but the people were gone. It was a beautiful evening. Sunny but not warm at all. No wind but the hint of a breeze. Not humid. But the streets were empty. People here and there, a few cars and a few bikes. Nothing like days’ past where there were fewer cars but plenty of people out walking. Was it the time or is something different? It’s the last night before we reopen the state. The last night of the stay at home order. Are people in because they anticipate going out tomorrow?

I went out because I wanted one more night without cars. One more night of this different world. I didn’t and I don’t want to let it go. I wonder what tomorrow will bring? I wonder what June 1st will bring? Tonight was different and I loved it. I stopped in the middle of an intersection in the Heights. Not a busy spot but a place where there would be cars and people. Nothing. No people and no cars. Nearly silent and completely empty. It was beautiful and a little haunting. I wondered if something had happened that I’d missed. Was everyone inside watching the news? No. They just weren’t there. It was beautiful.
